RI Waves is a public awareness campaign working to encourage all road users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, skateboarders, and others – to acknowledge one another with a wave of the hand. RI Waves was born of the successful Newport Waves which launched in 2015 as the result of several tragic pedestrian deaths in the City. In response, this proactive, positive, and friendly campaign had people “doing the Newport wave” for safer streets. In 2018, RIDOT got behind the campaign and helped expand it statewide. The current goal is to bring it to all 39 Cities and Towns in RI so each municipality is being asked to partner with the DOT by publicizing the campaign via appropriate Town outlets. By adopting the draft Resolution, the Town commits to helping raise awareness of the "Stop, Look, and Wave" initiative at the local level.
